MLB Pipeline farm ranking has Cubs outside Top 10

by - Senior Editor -

As the 2022 MLB season beings to start up, the Chicago Cubs find themselves in a promising position for the future, according to the latest rankings by MLB Pipeline.

The Cubs’ farm system has been ranked 12th overall, up from their preseason rank of 18 and midseason rank of 18 last season.

Leading the way for the Cubs are three outfielders in the Top 100 Prospects list: Pete Crow-Armstrong, Kevin Alcántara, and Brennen Davis. Crow-Armstrong, ranked No. 28 overall, was acquired by the Cubs in the trade that sent Javier Báez to the New York Mets.

Alcántara, ranked No. 87, was acquired by the Cubs in the Anthony Rizzo trade with the New York Yankees. Davis, ranked No. 92, was the Cubs’ second-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft.

While the Cubs’ outfield prospects are impressive, their greatest strength may lie in their pitching depth. The Cubs added several promising arms in the 2021 MLB Draft and through trades, including Cade Horton and Jackson Ferris in the Draft, and Hayden Wesneski and Ben Brown in trades. These young pitchers may form the backbone of the Cubs’ future rotation.

In addition to their top prospects, the Cubs also have two international shortstops with high ceilings in Cristian Hernandez and Derniche Valdez. While they will need time to develop, these prospects could become key contributors in the future.

The Cubs’ improved farm system ranking is a positive sign for the team’s future, as they look to rebuild and return to contention in the coming years. With a strong core of young talent, including their promising outfield prospects and pitching depth, the Cubs appear to be on the right track.
