Cubs place Montgomery on DL, recall reliever

by -

PITTSBURGH – The Chicago Cubs today placed left-handed pitcher Mike Montgomery on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to August 14) with left shoulder inflammation and recalled left-handed pitcher Randy Rosario from Triple-A Iowa.

Rosario, 24, begins his fifth stint with the Cubs and is available for tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

Rosario is 4-0 with seven holds and a 3.00 ERA (11 ER/33.0 IP) in 28 relief appearances for the Cubs this season. He pitched to a 2.16 ERA (4 ER/16.2 IP) in 14 games from June 24-August 3 prior to allowing four runs in 1.0 inning in his most recent big league outing, August 5 vs. San Diego. This season, Rosario has walked 19, struck out 21 and held opponents to a .252 batting average (31-for-123). He has stranded 17 of 20 inherited runners and held the opponent scoreless in 21 of 28 outings. In 11 appearances of more than an inning, Rosario has posted a 1.33 ERA (3 ER/20.1 IP).

Claimed off waivers by the Cubs in November of last year, Rosario has no record and a 0.79 ERA (2 ER/22.2 IP) in 15 games with Iowa this season.

Rosario made his major league debut with the Twins last year, allowing eight earned runs in 2.1 innings in two relief outings. In eight minor league seasons, he is 18-22 with a 3.21 ERA (134 ER/375.1 IP) in 122 outings, including 55 starts. A native of Rio San Juan, D.R., Rosario originally signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Twins in August of 2010.

Montgomery, 29, is 4-4 with a 3.62 ERA (40 ER/99.1 IP) in 32 games, including 13 starts, for Chicago this season. He is 4-3 with a 3.08 ERA (25 ER/73.0 IP) in his 13 starts since moving into the starting rotation in late May when right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish landed on the D.L. (right triceps tendinitis).
