PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Chicago Cubs today recalled outfielder Alexander Canario from Triple-A Iowa and placed outfielder Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain.

Canario, 23, is hitting .269 (14-for-52) with five doubles, two home runs and seven RBI in 13 games this season for Iowa. He leads I-Cubs outfielders in slugging percentage (.481) and OPS (.858). Over his last four games, Canario is hitting .389 (7-for-18) with two RBI, a .421 OBP and a .611 slugging percentage.

He made his major league debut Sept. 6, 2023 vs. San Francisco and became the only Cub to hit a grand slam in his first career start (since 1901) Sept. 19 vs. Pittsburgh. He hit .294 (5-for-17) with a home run and six RBI in six games with the Cubs last season. According to MLB Pipeline, Canario entered the season ranked as the Cubs’ 12th-best prospect.

A native of Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, Canario was acquired from the San Francisco Giants along with right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian July 30, 2021 in exchange for INF/OF Kris Bryant. He is in his fourth season in the Cubs organization.

Suzuki, 29, is hitting .305 (18-for-59) in 15 games with three home runs and 13 RBI for the Cubs this season.

The Cubs play the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix tonight at 8:40 p.m. CT in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 The Score.
