CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled infielder Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, catcher Tucker Barnhart has been designated for assignment.

Mastrobuoni, 27, begins his fifth stint with Chicago (Opening Day-April 14, May 12-June 9, June 13-27, July 8-29) this season and has batted .212 (21-for-99) with three doubles, one home run, four RBI, 12 walks and 10 stolen bases in 43 games. He has seen time at third base (19 games), right field (six games), second base (five games), shortstop (four games), left field (one game) and has four starts as the club’s designated hitter.

Prior to his option to Iowa July 29, Mastrobuoni batted .357 (10-for-28) with seven runs scored, one home run and three RBI in eight games for Chicago. In 13 contests with Iowa this month he has hit .277 (13-for-47) with a .393 on-base percentage, three doubles, one triple, two home runs, six RBI and 13 runs scored.

The five-foot, 10-inch Mastrobuoni was acquired from Tampa Bay in November 2022 for minor league right-handed pitcher Alfredo Zárraga. Selected by the Rays in the 14th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Nevada, he made his major league debut with Tampa Bay last season, appearing in eight games.

Barnhart, 32, is batting .202 (22-for-109) with three doubles, one home run and nine RBI with Chicago this season after signing with the club as a free agent in December 2022.
