The 2016 Chicago Cubs were truly magical. So much so that the victory tour lives on in downtown Chicago in Miracle the Musical.
I had the chance to visit the Royal George Theatre last night and sit back and relive the roller coaster that was the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs team. The expectations were high for the Cubs that year, and for once there was no next year, it was going to happen...and it did. With one throw to Rizzo’s chest, Kris Bryant ended the best game of all time, the World Series, the 2016 season, all of the Cubs’ fans continuous heartbreak, the 108-year championship drought and broke the curse. Without giving up too much, Miracle the Musical details one family and friend group’s journey through the 2016 season, the Cubs best year yet. And like the team went through adversity, so did the family when budget issues and sickness struck. Just like their beloved Cubbies, they made a damn good team, looked for a Miracle, and remembered that you have to have faith. The musical did a phenomenal job of showing who really won when the Cubs were “pouring out of the dugout, jumping up and down like a bunch of delirious ten-year-olds” because it wasn’t only the team. Sure Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Ben Zobrist, and Jon Lester played in the game and have the rings to show for it, but that one win was for so much more than just for the team. Winning the World Series was as much for Bryant and Rizzo as it was for your Grandma and Grandpa. Everyone in the world knows that although they never appeared in a game in 2016, the late great Ron Santo, Ernie Banks and even Harry Caray we’re flying the W high in the sky and feeling like the champions they deserved to be. Sure, game seven broke a 108-year curse of championship drought, but the Cubs’ victory lifted the entire city up in triumph, more than any team’s victory could. There’s a certain magic in the ivy, the scoreboard, Wrigley Field and in those pinstripes, and anybody who ever went to that stadium or put on that jersey felt like winners were winners. Drinks were being poured on gravesites for beloved relatives who always believed it was going to happen. Well, it did happen, and to some, it truly felt like a miracle. So I encourage you to relive the magic and watch Miracle the Musical.
