Cubs reportedly interested in veteran closer

by - Senior Editor -

The trade deadline is approaching very rapidly as teams are scrambling to try to improve their ballclub.

One of the teams trying to upgrade their pitching is the first-place Chicago Cubs. They have been connected to Orioles reliever Zach Britton since he is on the trade block.

According to a report by MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Cub are also interested in Mets closer Jeurys Familia.

For the season, Familia has a 4-4 record with a 2.88 ERA, 43 strikeouts, and 17 saves.

The Mets closer would certainly be a welcome bullpen addition with the Cubs as he would help with the injury-prone Brandon Morrow.

Another report has the Cubs out of the running for Familia with the Oakland A's as the frontrunner. I guess we will just have to see how it all pans out as we head near the trade deadline.
