WATCH: Baez gets heated after pitcher taunts him, benches clear |
CINCINNATI — After striking out Chicago Cubs second baseman
Javier Baez to end the top half of the seventh, Cincinnati Reds reliever Amir Garrett took his celebration a little too far.
Letting out a raucous scream, Garrett was very animated as he trotted off the mound, causing Baez to stare him down. The two proceeded to chirp back and forth before being separated by the home-plate umpire. The Reds and Cubs were having so much fun they decided to get everyone involved on the field #BenchesCleared pic.twitter.com/zJZDb9ItLM Naturally, the benches cleared because of the fracas, and Cubs players Albert Almora, Jr., and Anthony Rizzo were especially upset with Garrett for inciting the confrontation. Nothing came of the to-do, though, as no players were ejected, and Garrett was pulled after the inning. Garrett's over-the-top reaction to the strikeout was likely done in response to Baez's ogling of a grand slam that he hit off Garrett last May. .@Javy23baez got the slam AND the swag. https://t.co/R3DxkumWrc #PapaSlam pic.twitter.com/Sw8jwY0Vlr Pitchers are known for never forgetting when batters celebrated a little excessively at their expense, and this was likely a case of Garrett holding a grudge.
