Dave Martinez, who played for the Cubs from 1985-88 and 2000, is in his second season as the team's major league bench coach … the 2016 campaign marks his 28th season in professional baseball and his ninth as a full-time coach. A former outfielder, he played 16 seasons in the big leagues with nine teams: the Cubs (1986-88, 2000), Montreal (1988-91), Cincinnati (1992), San Francisco (1993-94), the White Sox (1995-97), Tampa Bay (1998-2000), Texas (2000), Toronto (2000) and Atlanta (2001). Recorded the first hit in Tampa Bay's history with a third inning single off the first base bag against Justin Thompson of the Detroit Tigers on March 31, 1998. Was named Tampa Bay's bench coach on October 11, 2007 … was the longest tenured bench coach in team history prior to joining the Cubs. Was drafted by the Cubs in the third round of the 1983 Draft out of Valencia Community College in Orlando, Fla. Martinez: Managerial and Coaching Career The 2016 campaign is Dave's ninth season as a big league coach, and his second with the Cubs ... was Tampa Bay's bench coach under manager Joe Maddon from 2008-14, as the club went 627-508 and reached the 2008 World Series. Served as a Spring Training coach in 2006 and 2007 … filled in as the first base coach the first three weeks of the 2007 season. Made four trips to the postseason in his seven years as a coach with Tampa Bay after making only one postseason appearance in 16 seasons as a player (2001 with Atlanta). In addition to bench coach duties, Dave also oversaw Tampa Bay's baserunning and bunting program. Martinez: Playing Career Dave played 16 seasons in the big leagues after being drafted by the Cubs in 1983 … posted a .276 batting average (1,599-for-5,795) with 795 runs scored, 238 doubles, 72 triples, 91 home runs and 580 RBI in 1,919 games. Appeared in four big league campaigns with the Cubs (1986-88, 2000), logging a .255 mark (224-for-877) in 288 games. His 15 assists and four double plays turned as a right fielder in 2000 were tops in the major leagues. Enjoyed a career year in 1999 with the Rays, setting career-highs in at-bats (514), hits (146), doubles (25) and RBI (66). Had the first hit in Tampa Bay's history with a third inning single off the first base bag against Justin Thompson of the Detroit Tigers on March 31, 1998.
