Cubs claim Red Sox pitcher off waivers

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today claimed right-handed pitcher Chandler Shepherd off of waivers from the Boston Red Sox. Shepherd has been optioned to Double-A Tennessee.

Shepherd, 26, is 17-28 with 16 saves and a 4.09 ERA (174 ER/383.1 IP) in 158 career appearances (35 starts) covering the last six minor league seasons in the Red Sox organization. He was selected by the Red Sox in the 13th Round of the 2014 Draft out of the University of Kentucky. The righthander went 0-5 with a 10.01 ERA (33 ER/29.2 IP) in eight appearances, seven as a starter, for Triple-A Pawtucket this season before being designated for assignment yesterday.

Chicago’s 40-man roster now stands at 40 players.
