LOS ANGELES – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Brandon Morrow from the 10-day disabled list and optioned right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni to Triple-A Iowa.
Morrow, 33, landed on the D.L. June 20 (retro to June 17) with lower back tightness. In his first season with Chicago, he has no record, 16 saves and a 1.59 ERA (4 ER/22.2 IP) in 26 relief appearances. Morrow ranks second in the National League with a 94.1 save percentage and is sixth in the league with 16 saves. Since moving to a full-time relief role beginning in 2016 with San Diego, Morrow is 7-0 with 18 saves in 21 chances and a 1.86 ERA (17 ER/82.1 IP) in 89 games. All told, he is 51-43 with 34 saves, four shutouts and a 3.99 ERA (377 ER/851.0 IP) in 325 games, including 113 starts, with the Mariners (2007-09), Blue Jays (2010-14), Padres (2015-16), Dodgers (2017) and Cubs, walking 368 batters and striking out 871. Mazzoni, 28, is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA (1 ER/7.2 IP) in seven relief outings spanning three stints with Chicago this season. He has gone 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA (11 ER/25.2 IP) in 17 relief appearances with Iowa.
