Cubs recall reliever for '27th man' for doubleheader

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell from Triple-A Iowa. He will serve as the “27th man” for the club’s second game of today’s split doubleheader vs. the Colorado Rockies.

Jewell, 28, begins his second stint with the Cubs this season and is 0-1 with an 8.00 ERA (8 ER/9.0 IP) in nine relief appearances, walking four and striking out 10. In 23 relief appearances for Iowa this season, he is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA (10 ER/32.1 IP) and four saves, walking 13 and striking out 35 for an average of 9.7 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. He has allowed just three home runs in 129 batters faced and has recorded a 1.05 WHIP.

Jewell, who signed a minor league deal with Chicago in November 2020, is 0-2 with a 7.23 ERA (30 ER/37.1 IP) in 30 major league relief appearances with the Los Angeles Angels (2018-2019) and the Cubs. He was originally selected by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Northeast Oklahoma A&M. Jewell is 25-43 with 19 saves, one complete game, one shutout and a 4.80 ERA (288 ER/539.2 IP) in 181 minor league games, 77 as a starter. He has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen since 2018.
