Cubs reportedly calling up Matt Shaw after Triple-A tear

Multiple reports, including MLB insider Jon Heyman, indicate that the Cubs are promoting Matt Shaw back to the big leagues.

"Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw is indeed coming up to the Cubs, as I just mentioned on @mullyhaugh," Heyman posted on X. "Shaw killed it in Iowa and rounds out terrific lineup. Cubs will try to trade defensive specialist Nicky Lopez, who didn’t travel with the team to Miami."

Craig Counsell hinted Sunday night, following the sweep of the White Sox, that this move might be happening, as Shaw wasn't in the lineup for the I-Cubs on Sunday.

Shaw has four home runs in the last few games against the St. Paul Saints. Overall, he has five homers and seven RBIs and a .923 slugging percentage in his last 35 at-bats.

“He went back down to work on some adjustments, trying to tone himself down a little bit, get on time a little bit more effectively and we’ve seen that over the last few games,” Cubs general Manager Carter Hawkins said Sunday. “The results have been pretty obvious — four home runs in the last three games. We’re encouraged and hopefully he’ll be able to help us out here soon.”

It is also reported that the Cubs will try to trade defensive specialist Nicky Lopez, whom they signed at the end of April. They will likely designate him for assignment to make roster space for Shaw.

Lopez hit .056 with a .283 OPS in 14 games for the Cubs.
