WATCH: Baez gives funny interview regarding his milestone walk |
QUEENS — Chicago Cubs second baseman Javier Baez has not been particularly fond of taking pitches this season, drawing only seven walks in his 203 at-bats.
In fact, Baez garnered the first walk in his last 183 plate appearances during the Cubs' 5-1 win over the New York Mets on Thursday. Prior to that, he most recently garnered a base on balls on April 11 via an intentional walk and last drew an unintentional walk on April 7. However, Baez was brutally honest in his assessment of his milestone walk, telling reporters after the game, "That ball almost hit me. That's why I walked." Referencing ball four of his ninth-inning walk, Baez pointed out that it was essentially physically impossible for him to have swung at the inside pitch that earned him the walk. Cubs manager Joe Maddon backed up Baez's assessment, telling the media that the only way that Baez was going to draw a walk is if the fourth ball "almost hit him." Baez, who was indeed aware of just how long that it had been since he last walked, credited his savviness at the plate for his streak-ending walk, saying, "I was seeing the ball good. It felt great." The Cubs' hot-hitting infielder was not too keen on assuring reporters that a similar streak would not come to fruition in the future, though, remarking with a wry smile, "I don't go out there looking for a walk. As long as the pitcher's there, I'm swinging."
