WATCH: Craig Counsell provides Porter Hodge, Shota Imanaga injury updates |
Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell met with the media before the May 31 game against the Cincinnati Reds to discuss when the team expects to see injured reliever Porter Hodge and starter Shota Imanaga return, as well as other updates.
“We’re good on the oblique, so we’re trying to get through that right now,” Counsell said on Hodge. “Making progress and hope to be at the bullpen stage next week, but because of the time he’s missed, he’ll definitely require some rehab outing. “So, we’re looking at a couple weeks still.” Counsell said that Imanaga's return would be "well into June" from his injury. Video summary/cliff-notes:
(00:06) Porter Hodge Injury Update: His oblique issue is resolved, but a left hip impingement is now delaying his return. He's aiming for bullpen sessions next week and will require rehab outings.
(01:42) Opening Pitcher Strategy: Using an opener isn’t meant to send a message—Counsell emphasizes they try to win every day regardless of pitching structure.
(02:34) Shota Imanaga Update: He had a key bullpen session and fielding practice. If all goes well, he’ll head to Phoenix for a live batting practice session.
(03:11) Respect for Terry Francona: Counsell praises Francona’s people skills and managerial track record but doesn’t feel a different competitive mindset when facing him.
(04:30) Matt Shaw & Team Outlook: Counsell sees strong offensive and defensive contributions from the current lineup, highlighting Shaw’s development and quick adjustment at third base.
(05:14) Trade Deadline Approach: The front office is always open to ways to improve, particularly pitching, but will narrow focus as needed.
(05:40) Bullpen Management: The Cubs lack long-term bullpen fixtures unlike Counsell’s time in Milwaukee. He adapts strategy based on game flow rather than pre-set roles.
(08:09) Bullpen Usage & Rest: Comebacks require more bullpen use, but he stresses the need to balance effort with rest to maintain availability.
(10:28) Closer Role: Daniel Palencia is doing well in high-leverage situations. There’s no fixed closer—multiple relievers including Ryan Pressly are being used flexibly based on matchup and inning.
(12:16) Bullpen Development Philosophy: Counsell values having many bullpen options due to performance variability, citing Palencia’s rebound from a tough prior season as a success story.
