Cubs make several roster moves

Cubs Media Relations  ·

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today reinstated right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon from the 15-day injured list (right calf strain) and added left-handed pitcher Jordan Wicks as the 27th man for game two of today’s doubleheader. In a corresponding move, the Cubs optioned left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove to Triple-A Iowa.

Taillon, 33, was 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA (47 ER/95.1 IP), 74 strikeouts compared to 20 walks and a 1.11 WHIP in 17 games before being placed on the injured list with a right calf strain on July 1. At the time of his placement, he ranked fifth among qualified N.L. pitchers in walk rate (5.2%), seventh in opponent OBP (.275) and ninth in WHIP. Among Cubs pitchers on July 1, he ranked second in innings pitched and third in strikeouts.

Wicks, 25, pitched to a 3-4 record with one save, a 3.47 ERA (23 ER/59.2 IP) and 64 strikeouts in 16 games (13 starts) with the I-Cubs this season. In his last three outings with Iowa, including one start, he has allowed just one earned run on four hits and two walks with 14 strikeouts over 11.1 innings. He has made four appearances with the Cubs this year, all in relief, and gone 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA (9 ER/8.1 IP).

Cosgrove, 29, was recalled this morning ahead of game one of the doubleheader.

The Cubs play the second game of the doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at 7:05 p.m. CT at Wrigley Field. The game can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 the Score and, in Spanish, on WRTO 1200 AM.
