CHICAGO - This season has probably been the most tumultuous than most are through four weeks. That is why it was such a shocking surprise for Chicago fans when the Bears beat the Washington Commanders 40-20 on Thursday Night Football.
For quarterback Justin Fields, it was just his sixth win since coming into the NFL. “It felt good. Just the feeling that we all had after the game is just a feeling that you never want it to end,” Fields said. “So, just proud of the way all the guys came out and played tonight, and the o-line did their thing versus the dominant d-line. They showed out. Really just everybody, running backs did their thing, and receivers of course, did their thing too. Just proud of everybody.” This was not an easy game for Chicago. They suffered various injuries throughout the game at offensive line and running back, and they already came into the game short of a few defensive players. The Bears ended up running out of running backs after all three of their active backs suffered injuries. But, the fullback Khari Blasingame stepped up in a big way to avoid the offense becoming one-dimensional. “(Blasingame)’s a ball player. You can put him anywhere, and he’s going to know what to do. He’s just a football player - put him at tight end, receiver, running back, fullback, and he’s going to get the job done. So, proud of him for stepping in, doing his job, and really just carrying the run game late in the game,” Fields said. “Proud of the way Cody stepped in at center, and you can really put Cody anywhere; guard or center, he’s going to get the job done. It’s always good having Teven back playing ball. But, proud of those guys and the way they played tonight.” When only three people catch the ball in a game, typically, that is not a game thing. However, when one of them is receiver DJ Moore, and he has 230 receiving yards and three touchdowns, then it makes Fields’ job as a quarterback much easier, something he is very thankful for. “It makes my job easier. They left him one-on-one more times than I thought they would tonight,” Fields said. “So, when you always have him one-on-one, he’s going to win 95 percent of the time. Just thankful for him. He makes my job way easier. He showed out tonight.” Fields has also developed and grown a lot, particularly over the last two games. In those games, he has eight touchdown passes and only one interception. In fact, the win against Washington was his first game of the season without an interception. Getting Moore more involved will surely help to continue this trend. Through the first four games, the Minnesota Vikings have allowed a league-leading four touchdown passes. So, the next game in week six against the Vikings certainly seems to be a promising chance for Fields to continue his passing success as well. With the Vikings sitting at 1-3 going into their fifth game against the Carolina Panthers, this makes the game against Minnesota even more important for Chicago. Whether the Vikings win or lose, this game will become a battle for who will take a step up in the division. Particularly after how the 2023 season started for the Bears and finally ending their 14-game losing streak, they need to get a leg up in the division to prevent being at the bottom.
