Commentary: Descalso is certainly no Ben Zobrist

Descalso’s batting average is now down to a shocking .194, and his OPS has fallen to under .600. He’s batting just .094 in May, which is not what the Cubs bargained for. Full Story »

I wish only the best for Zo, he deserves happiness. Having said I believe Cub fans should prepare themselves for Zo not returning and possibly retiring from baseball.

I know Ian Happ continues to struggle in the minors but is his struggles any worse than Descalso? Maybe it's time to take a chance and bring him up from the minors and play 2nd base. At this point I don't think he could do any worse than Descalso. I think do know what that something has to happen as the Cubs haven't fallen back to losing games they could have, should have won. Starters are struggling to get through 5 innings, the bullpen is beyond unpredictable, it's like April all over. We score 7 or 8 runs and still lose.

I don't have the answer. The talent is there, so what can be done. I do know that we need a true closer, maybe Chatwood needs to be reinserted into the rotation. Lester has been terrible his last 4 outings, Darvish and Quintana need to be more efficient with their pitches. Word has gotten around that we can't throw strikes so take a walk and get the pitch count up, exactly what the Cubs did in 2016.

I love Baez and his God given instincts, but there are at bats where he needs to be more selective than aware of the situation. An average of two strike outs per game shouldn't be a part of his game plan and the same goes for Schwarber, though he has been better in the leadoff spot.

The offense overall has been there but it seems we tie or take the lead and immediately give it right back. We've got to have that shutdown inning after scoring and the pitchers have failed in that regard, miserably. There's nothing more demoralizing or momentum breaking than to fight back, tie or take the lead then then have the pitcher give it up the next inning. This is happening all too frequently. I don't know if if it's mental focus, lack of execution of pitches, pitch calling, all I know is that it needs to stop and stop soon.

I'd certainly agree this is getting out of hand.

I'm confused on the whole Zo situation. Did he die? People get divorced everyday and they still show up for work, where is he? Either get back to work or quit, he's taking up a roster spot and salary. I was in favor of dumping him after last season so no loss for me.

Descalso is done in my book. He was average before the Cubs signed him and now fans are just hoping for average from him. Dump him too and free up another spot. His defense is horrible and if he can't hit why is he still here?

There has to be another infielder in the system, that isn't Happ, that can be brought up to help Bote out. You play Russell and Baez and you have no issues.

As for the bullpen, back up the truck once again and bring in another group from Iowa and Tennessee.

Hey, Mr. Baseball- Zo is neither taking up a roster spot nor cutting into salary, as he is on the restricted list and not getting paid.

He is taking up a roster spot on the 40 man and he is still going to get paid. Play or quit, two choices.

He is NOT on the 40-man, Dan- he's on the restricted list. Much like Russell when he was suspended.

You are technically correct.

However, if he calls Jed today and says I'll be there in an hour he's back on the roster and someone gets sent back down or released so the Cubs have no flexibility right now.

And if you think he is not going to collect some of that money you're dreaming.

Plus I still say there is no reason for him not to be playing right now. Its a divorce, not cancer surgery. It shows what a selfish teammate he is.

Dan, count yourself lucky that you've never been divorced, but if you haven't been through it, you can have no idea how devastating these can be for some.
