Odds and Ends: Espada may be Epstein's choice, RIP Eric Cooper, more

Just about the time that I had David Ross pegged as the next manager for the Chicago Cubs, Theo Epstein has now interviewed Astros’ bench coach, Eric Espada for a second time. Full Story »

I believe that Espada is the best choice to the Cubs next manager. That's not an indictment on Rossy's ability to to make a good manager, which someday he'll be, but I just feel Espada is the man right now. Ross would be an excellent choice as bench coach and would certainly add to his resume. What a Duo the Cubs would have with those two guys. However, I agree that unless it's a managerial spot Ross will most likely stay in the booth. I hate that thought because he would be the perfect bench coach and have a lot of fun influence on he and Espada's decision making. I don't look at it as a slap in the face if Ross isn't Epstein' s choice for manager. I see it as more of a stepping stone to the next level. I'd love to see Ross back in the dugout with a Cubs uniform on. Having said all of that, my choice remains with Espada, and with Rossy next to him WOW what a winning combination that would be.

The way the game is played today Espada is very qualified. Winning is in his DNA. Being bi-lingual certainly doesn't hurt either. He's young, being only two years older than Ross so I believe he is will be able to relate to the current roster and those to follow.

If no announcement is made before tonight's game you almost have to believe that Espada is Epstein's choice, but will have to wait until the Series is over to hear.

Whether it's Espada or Ross, I see it as a win-win decision and can't wait for 2020 to start.
