St. Louis Cardinals (88-73) @ Chicago Cubs (94-67)

Jack Flaherty (8-8, 3.16) vs. Mike Montgomery (5-6, 3.99)

Final game of the regular season. Cubs tied with Brewers for first place in division. Cardinals (already eliminated from playoff contention) essentially have nothing to play for.

M1 — Cubs off to awful start. Cards already up 2-0. Montgomery gives up leadoff double to Carpenter. DeJong scores him on single. Heyward then misplays single to CF. Allows another run to score.

Interesting that Montgomery got this start. Of course, Maddon had to factor in possibility of game 163 tomorrow, as well as WC game on Tuesday. So it would be tough to switch up rotation. Wonder if Maddon thought about starting 1 of the other 4 starters on short rest today.

E1 — Javy ignores stop sign on 2-out single by Rizzo. Gets thrown out easily at home. Didn't even require a great throw to get him. Potentially a costly decision by Javy.

Have heard/read a variety of Cubs announcers/media members discuss the bone-headed base-running decisions that have plagued Cubs this season. Base-running specialist Butterfield has certainly been an asset in some cases, but Cubs players have committed a lot of self-inflicted wounds on the basepaths.

The Cardinals have been terrible defensively in this series. Really weird that one of the most buttoned-up teams in baseball is playing like it's late March in late September.
