Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein held his yearly recap press conference recently and he discussed in length about the difficult challenges that his off Read Update »
Obviously Theo is being polite to his hitting coach with his comments. But as a former player & coach I can tell you that the majority of the Cub hitters lack basic fundamentals. Its always about the "fundi's" and Theo should know better. Its no longer about the pathetic scouting in the Cubs organization but rather about the lack of proper coaching. Players that do not know a strike zone... players that do not know how to hit an outside pitch to the opposite field... players who can not execute a hit & run... players that can not even execute a bunt or squeeze at a MLB level should all go down to AAA. Epstein is wrong about Chili Davis because it is his job to teach... and if the players can not learn they simply need to go elsewhere. Just because you work your tail off does not mean success... if you can not coach you need to go... as a player if you can not execute you need to go. This is the bottom line why the Cubs have problems during the second half and post season play. I could do a better job as a hitting coaching thats a fact.
