Commentary: Are the Cubs ready for the second half?

The second-half starts now, and while the Cubs are in first place, they’re hanging on by a thread. Changes? None that were obvious, and you can’t repeat your mistakes and expect better results.

Historically under Joe Maddon, the Cubs certainly have been a second half team. Even after their late season collapse last year, they were still 10 games over after the break, but were 18 over at the break. On average, the Cubs have gone 19 games over 500 post all star break under maddon. I would love for that trend to continue but i just dont see it.

With so many division games out of the shoot early it will not be easy to get on a long run and create some distance. Eventually i do expect the Cubs to put a nice run together but it may take a little bit. Even if they go 12 games over 500 after the break they win 89 games this year. That would be ahead of Pecota but still not what we expected from this team.

From 2015-2017 Maddon and his team were an absurd 72 games above 500 post all star break. With 72 games left, the Cubs would literally have to go 48-24 to reach 95 wins which is what Joe maddon has averaged in his time with Chicago. That alone will be a daunting task. This team was 11 over in mid may and was on the verge of putting the division notice once again before going 7 under to reach break. I just dont know if this current roster has the heart, desire or fight left in them to rip off another huge second half that could save Maddons job.
