The Week in Review: Cubs with epic comeback, crazy weather |
CHICAGO -- The Cubs home opener was scheduled for Monday, but was postponed until Tuesday due to snow on the field and the unappealing weather expected for the day. Just a typical April day in Chicago if you ask me. Off the tundra,
Anthony Rizzo was placed on the 10 DL, retroactive to April 6th, and is expected to make his return on the today against the Cardinals. Additionally, Rizzo took a trip to Lurie Children’s Hospital to visit and spend time with patients.
On Tuesday, the Cubs dropped the opener against the Pirates by a score of 8-5. Tyler Chatwood got roughed up, allowing five earned runs over five innings. Mike Montgomery would give up the other runs on Francisco Cervelli’s three-run home run in the 7th inning. At the plate, Javy Baez was the highlight, hitting the first home run at Wrigley this year, and following it up with his second of the day in the 7th inning. In the second game of three, the Pirates got to Jon Lester early, scoring four runs on him in five innings of work. However, the Cubs brought their bats this time racking up 16 hits to win by a score of 13-5. Javy Baez was in the middle of it yet again, hitting two home runs for the second straight night, piling up four RBIs. Ian Happ also hit his second long ball of the year. Overshadowed the previously mentioned highlights was Kris Bryant, who went 3-5 with two RBIs of his own. He’s currently hitting .348 on the year. Just getting warmed up. #CarryTheFreight pic.twitter.com/VBc1dqmNAe In the series finale, it seemed as if the Cubs used all their offensive energy the night before, with the only run scored coming on the solo home run by Kyle Schwarber in the 4th inning, giving him three on the year. Kyle Hendricks looked strong again allowing two runs, both solo homeruns, over 6 innings on the mound. Justin Wilson struggled, looking like the version of him we saw at times late last year, giving up four earned runs in just 2/3 of an inning. On Friday the Cubs opened up a three-game set against the Braves. Unfortunately, they forgot their bats in the opener getting shut out 4-0. Darvish looked strong early, but struggled in the 4th inning, giving up four runs, leading to his early exit. Those would be the only runs scored on the day by either team. Ian Happ came up with two of the Cubs four hits on the day, raising his season average to .244. If you watched the entire Cubs game on Saturday, I applaud you. If you were at the game and left early, I don’t blame you. If you were at the game and stuck it out, you got the reward you deserve. The Cubs came back from a 10-2 deficit in the 6th inning to win by a score of 14-10. Quintana struggled big time, giving up seven earned runs in just 2.1 innings. After the game, both Joe Maddon and Braves manager Brian Snitker said the cold conditions made play unsafe, specifically for the pitchers. While the Cubs plated 14 runs, Albert Almora hit the only homerun for the Cubs, coming in the 1st inning. Down five runs in the 8th inning, the Cubs resilience paid off as they managed a nine-run rally in the bottom of the 8th to give them the comeback win. Javy Baez led the way yet again with four RBIs, bringing him to 14 on the year. The series finale was postponed as the wrath of Midwest weather was felt all around the region. The game has been rescheduled for May 14th. Albert Almora also celebrated his 24th birthday on Sunday.
