Cubs reportedly 'showing interest' in Craig Kimbrel

The Chicago Cubs bullpen has been up and down throughout the 2019 season. However, one thing is for sure, the team needs to find a closer with the uncertainty of injured Brandon Morrow still on the injured list for undetermined amount of time.

The Cubs are showing interest in free agent closer Craig Kimbrel and "doing background work" according to the latest report by MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.

"The Cubs are showing interest in Kimbrel, according to major-league sources,' Rosenthal said. "An unexpected event – the continued absence of super-utility man Ben Zobrist, 38, who is on the restricted list while going through a divorce from his wife, Julianna – might be creating greater financial flexibility for the club."

Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein was asked recently about the possibility of signing a big-time closer like Kimbrel.

"There's not too many free agents out there," Epstein said. "I think trades are probably more likely than free agents, but you never know. Anyone who's still out there, you're obviously, if they can help you, you're engaged with them. It's just trying to find a way to make it work.

Kimbrel will be signed soon as he will no longer cost a team a draft pick and pool money after the upcoming MLB Draft on Monday evening. If the Cubs snag the seven-time All-Star closer, it would allow Steve Cishek and Pedro Strop (injured list since May 6) to eventually get back in their normal setup roles. Another BIG if would be Morrow returning down the stretch of the season, and then you have a tremendously talented bullpen at your disposal.

For his career, Kimbrell has a sparkling 1.91 ERA with 333 saves, 868 strikeouts, and a 0.92 WHIP.
