John Mallee, a Chicago native, is in his second year in the Cubs organization and his sixth as a major league hitting coach … he brings 20 seasons of experience in professional baseball as a coach and played two years in the minor leagues. Previously served as a big league hitting coach with the Marlins (2010-11) and Astros (2013-14). Drafted by the Phillies in the 12th round of the 1991 MLB Draft and spent two seasons in professional baseball as in infielder with Rookie League Martinsville and Single-A Spartanburg. Attended Chicago State University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Kinesiology … at UIC earned All-League and All-Tournament honors in both 1990 and 1991. Mallee: Managerial and Coaching Career John has been a hitting coach or coordinator since 1996, having spent time in Milwaukee's, Montreal's, Miami's and Houston's organizations prior to joining the Cubs. Began his coaching career as a hitting coach in the Brewers organization from 1996-2000 where he spent time with Class A Beloit (1996-97, 1999), Class A Stockton (1998) and Double-A Huntsville (2000). Served as the hitting coach with Triple-A Ottawa in the Expos' organization in 2001. In 2002, joined the Marlins organization where he spent the next eight-plus seasons as the organization's minor league hitting coordinator before being named interim major league hitting coach in June, 2010 … continued as hitting coach for the 2011 season. In October 2012 was named to Bo Porter's Houston Astros coaching staff as the major league hitting coach, a post he served for two seasons before joining the Cubs. Mallee: Playing Career John appeared in 115 minor league games after being drafted by the Phillies in the 12th round of the 1991 draft … batted a combined .208 with 49 runs scored and 28 RBI in two seasons. Played in the Rookie League with Martinsville in 1991, batting .237 in 39 games … in 1992, played in 76 games at Class A Spartanburg, hitting .188 with 34 runs. Appeared exclusively as a middle infielder, making 95 appearances at shortstop and 20 appearances at second base.
