Cubs News: Epstein on Ben Zobrist: "He knows the door is open"

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein shared the latest with veteran second baseman Ben Zobrist before Thursday's game against the Dodgers.

"There's been a little definition added to how he hopes this thing might go," he said. "I've been in constant touch with Zobrist. He knows the door is open. I think he's got an idea in mind on how he would like this to go, but his priorities are clear — that's family first."

Zobrist has not played since May 6 as he has been on the restricted list for personal reasons regarding a divorce.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer also spoke about Zobrist's situation on Thursday.

"We know that given his professionalism that when he does come back, he'll get himself in great shape and he'll be ready to play. That's kind of how we see it now, and we'll keep talking to him. But that's certainly the expectation today."

The 38-year old is batting .241 with 10 RBI in 26 games this season.

"It's difficult for us," Hoyer said. "We're obviously very sensitive to Ben and his family and don't want to comment a lot."

CubsHQ would like to wish Ben and his family the best as they deal with this very stressful time in their lives.
