WATCH: Highlights from Cubs' thrashing of Rangers, including two Baez bombs

by - Senior Writer -

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Chicago Cubs wasted no time in breaking out the big bats at the start of the 2019 season. Routing the Texas Rangers 12-4 on Opening Day on Thursday, the Cubs tabbed 13 hits, including three home runs.

Shortstop Javier Baez led the way for the Cubs with a pair of home runs, becoming the first Cub since Corey Patterson to hit multiple homers in the first game of the season. Chicago's first run of the game came on a 395-foot solo shot off Baez's bat in the fourth. In the following inning, "El Mago" clubbed a 3-run bomb off former Cubs reliever Jesse Chavez. Baez hit a career-high 34 home runs last season and is well on his way to surpassing that mark.
