WATCH: Willson Contreras shows off his outfielder skills, throws out runner at home

PITTSBURGH — Proving that he is no slouch in the outfield, Willson Contreras of the Chicago Cubs gunned down a runner at home to maintain the Cubs' lead against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night. The catcher made his first career start in right field, and he channeled Jason Heyward by firing a laser to the plate.

With his role reversed, Contreras found himself throwing the baseball to the dish in order to prevent a runner from scoring, while catcher Victor Caratini applied the tag on Melky Cabrera to keep the Cubs ahead by a score of 5-4. The inning-ending play came in the bottom of the eighth, as Contreras charged a single hit by Jose Osuna and hummed a spot-on throw into Caratini's mitt for the best defensive play of the evening.
