On Tuesday, Jack Sanborn was awarded the Brian Piccolo Award at Halas Hall, joining running back
David Montgomery as a recipient of the prestigious honor.
The award, which is given annually by the Chicago Bears, recognizes a veteran and a rookie who best exemplify the qualities that former Bears running back Brian Piccolo embodied. Sanborn, who signed as an undrafted free agent, made a name for himself last season as one of the best rookies on the team. He had 48 solo tackles in six starts and was on pace to lead the league had he started all 17 games. His exceptional play earned him a spot on Pro Football Focus’ All-Rookie Team. Receiving the Brian Piccolo Award was a special moment for Sanborn. “It’s incredibly special,” he said. “I mean, the guys that you go through every day with, they see you the most of anyone, and then they’re the ones that vote you in something. Any award that’s voted on by your teammates, by the players, holds more weight.” The award is named after Brian Piccolo, a former Bears running back who passed away at the age of 26 from embryonal cell carcinoma.
