Cubs News: Free Agent Target: Isaiah Wynn

We are getting to the point in the NFL offseason when things begin to slow down. Sure, you will still have teams making plenty of moves, but unless some big names are coming off the board, most of those signings will go unnoticed as teams are in the planning stages for training camp.

Regarding the Bears, in particular Ryan Poles, he is never going to keep things quiet, as he remains adamant about improving this team from the top down. Sure, he has done a great job of that already, but everyone knows that a successful team needs a ton of depth. Poles will focus on that in the next few months, as he wants to bring in as much depth as possible for his team.

Not only does he want to bring in-depth, but he wants to bring in talented depth and players that could start if called upon. One of the most significant areas of need for this team could use more depth, which is the offensive line. This has been an ongoing issue the past few seasons, but Poles has done a great job at least trying to improve the offensive line.

Next comes the depth side of it, where he would like to add more pieces to make them as good as possible. When you look at the current free agent market, most of the depth pieces will be available until training camp opens, but a few names should be scooped up now before it is too late.

Isaiah Wynn comes to mind as one of those players, as he remains a free agent. When the Bears drafted Darnell Wright, it gave them two solid Offensive Tackles to go with an improved interior portion of their offensive line. Still, they have far more guards on their roster than tackles, and the Bears need more tackles to get through the season.

One injury to Wright or Braxton Jones and the Bears would be forced to move one of their guards to tackle is never a good thing. That is where Wynn comes into play, as he could be a very nice pickup for the Bears and their offensive line depth. Wynn was a former first-round pick and was highly coveted thanks to his upper-body strength and athleticism.

However, as is the case for many prospects in the game, things never materialized for Wynn in New England, as a series of injuries and inconsistent play saw the Patriots let him go without giving him a second contract. Now on the open market, Wynn is looking for a new home and a new contract that will allow him to prove himself.

Maybe a fresh start is what Wynn needs to live up to the first-round hype that he once had. Ideally, Wynn would love to land a contract with the intent of starting, but at this point, he would like to latch on somewhere. Adding a guy like Wynn to the OL room in Chicago is a low-risk, high-reward move for Chicago, as he still has plenty of great traits.

All those traits that made him such a highly touted prospect are still there, but the inconsistent play has hurt him financially. That helps the Bears out, as he could come at a much lower price now than at any point in his career.

When you look at how their roster is constructed right now and having a guy in Justin Fields who likes to run, it would be irresponsible for the Bears to go into the 2023 season with so few true NFL tackles. Regardless of your feelings on Wynn as a player, it’s hard to deny the 27-year-old would add some excellent depth to Chicago’s line.

He would come into camp knowing his role on this team and have to work for any opportunities. Wynn would also bring a veteran presence to the offensive line room, which they need to improve. There are far worse moves than this, especially if adding depth is the main focus for the Bears for the rest of the offseason.
