Cubs activate Heyward from DL, option reliever

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward has been activated from the concussion list as lefty reliever Randy Rosario has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday. Today is the birthday of Rosario so it certainly is bittersweet news for the 24-year old.

He has a 0.52 ERA in 11 relief appearances with Iowa this season.

Heyward told reporters during pre-game interviews that on his attempt at the wall to catch a Dexter Fowler game-winning homer, he had a busted lip, several headaches, extreme fatigue, and it was the first concussion of his major league career.

"I noticed my headache wasn't feeling right," Heyward said. "I wasn't going to say anything but I am glad that I did. "I've never had a concussion and kinda makes a believer out of me going through it. This stuff is scary because you don't feel like yourself and you don't see anything wrong with you visually but something is not right."

The 28-year old gold glover is batting .227 (22-for-97) with three doubles, two homers, and 14 RBI in 29 games this season.

Heyward will not be starting tonight as veteran Ben Zobrist will be in right field. However, look for him to get worked in for a pinch-hit opportunity late in the game.
