Cubs add Reds pitcher off waivers, designate Felix Pena

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today claimed right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. Right-handed pitcher Felix Peña has been designated for assignment.

Farrell, 26, posted no record and a 5.54 ERA (8 ER/13.0 IP) in 10 major league appearances with Kansas City and Cincinnati this season, including a 2.61 ERA (3 ER/10.1 IP) in nine relief outings down the stretch with the Reds. He made his major league debut in a start with the Royals on July 1 vs. Minnesota (2.2 IP/5 ER), recording a no-decision in Kansas City’s 11-6 win. He was designated for assignment by the Royals on July 24, acquired by the Dodgers in a trade on July 28 and claimed off waivers by Cincinnati on August 9.

The righthander spent most of the 2017 campaign in Triple-A, going 8-6 with a 4.78 ERA (62 ER/116.2 IP) in 22 appearances (20 starts) with the Royals, Dodgers and Reds affiliates. Overall, Farrell is 25-28 with three saves and a 4.43 ERA (246 ER/500.1 IP) in 104 games (84 starts) covering five minor league seasons.

Farrell was originally selected by the Royals in the sixth round of the 2013 Draft out of Northwestern University. He is the son of Red Sox manager John Farrell, brother to Cubs area scout Shane Farrell and brother to former minor league outfielder Jeremy Farrell.

Peña, 27, went 1-0 with a 5.24 ERA (20 ER/34.1 IP) in 25 relief outings with the Cubs this season.
