CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today claimed left-handed pitcher C.D. Pelham off waivers from the Texas Rangers. Chicago’s 40-man roster now stands at 38 players.
Pelham, 24, has gone 11-12 with 28 saves and a 5.51 ERA (121 ER/197.2 IP) in 158 career minor league appearances, all but seven in relief, covering the last five seasons in the Rangers minor league system. He made 10 big league appearances with Texas in 2018, posting no record and a 7.04 ERA (6 ER/7.2 IP) in those outings. Pelham split the 2019 campaign between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Nashville, combining to go 1-4 with an 11.97 ERA (43 ER/32.1 IP) in 42 relief outings.
The 6-foot-6 southpaw was originally selected by Texas in the 33rd round of the 2015 Draft out of Spartanburg Methodist College. Pelham is a native of Lancaster, South Carolina.
If you're looking at Pelham's brutal results from 2019, you're missing the point of a move like this. He's a huge lefty who sits in the upper-90s, gets a ton of movement. He's 24. Cubs have roster space. Sometimes you just grab raw stuff and see what happens. Can stash at AAA.— Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) November 27, 2019
