Cubs place reliever on DL, recall Maples |
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed left-handed pitcher Brian Duensing on the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder fatigue and recalled right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples from Triple-A Iowa.
Maples will be available for the Cubs this afternoon as they conclude their three-game series against the Minnesota Twins at Wrigley Field. The 26-year-old Maples joins the Cubs for the second time this season, as he tossed 2.0 scoreless innings last Wednesday at Dodger Stadium before being optioned back to Iowa the next day. He has gone 2-2 with five saves and a 3.20 ERA (9 ER/25.1 IP) in 26 relief outings with Iowa this season. Maples has fanned 42 while walking 24 in 25.1 innings, and has limited opponents to a .170 average. In his last 12 Triple-A outings since May 25, he has allowed just one unearned run in 11.2 innings, walking seven, striking out 20 and holding the opponent to a .108 average and a .385 OPS. Maples was originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2011 Draft. He made his major league debut in the final month of last season, allowing six runs in six relief outings (5.1 IP). Overall, he is 15-19 with 29 saves and a 4.42 ERA (133 ER/271.0 IP) in 161 career appearances (all but 30 in relief) covering seven minor league seasons. Last year, he struck out 100 batters in 63.1 innings across three minor league levels. Duensing, 35, is 2-0 with one save and a 6.92 ERA (20 ER/26.0 IP) in 35 relief appearances for the Cubs this season.
