Cubs Corner with Dustin Riese: Cubs farm system update, Prospect talk and rankings, more

by - Staff Writer -

On this edition of the Cubs Corner, presented by Coach’s Bar and Grill, Anthony welcomed CubsHQ’s very own Dustin Riese to give an update on the state of the Cubs farm system and some predictions on various prospects who are primed to impact the Chicago Cubs.

*Coach’s Note*: Despite the ongoing pandemic, Coach’s Bar and Grill is still doing carryout and delivery for their food so make sure you get to Coach’s.

The chat began with Dustin illustrating how no minor league season in 2020 has impacted the Cubs farm system and the minor leagues as a whole. Diving deeper, Dustin also described the impact on the 2020 draft class in particular, which was 35 rounds shorter than usual.

The conversation continued with Dustin outlining the Minor Leagues' plan to return to action and a prediction of whether or not the MLB draft will grow back to 40 rounds or nestle somewhere in between.

Dustin also gave his take on the rank of the Cubs prospects and listed some of the Cubs highest-ranked prospects, including:

Brailyn Marquez LHP

Brennen Davis OF

Miguel Amaya C

Ed Howard SS

Cole Roederer OF

Adbert Alzolay RHP

Nico Hoerner 2B

Burl Carraway P

Cory Abbott P

Chase Strumpf 2B

Ryan Jensen P

Dustin got into detail about Hoerner, Marquez, Amaya, and Howard.

The chat then shifted gears into the Yu Darvish trade, and Dustin was able to report on the prospects the Cubs acquired in that trade. All four were 20 years old or younger, and three of them shortstops.

Dustin also had high praise for the Cubs’ most recent international signee, Cristian Hernandez — who has been compared to Manny Machado, Alex Rodriguez, and Javier Baez.

That and more on this edition of the Cubs Corner.

As always, this episode, past episodes, and future episodes are available on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts, and the CubsHQ Website.
