PITTSBURGH – The Chicago Cubs today placed catcher
Austin Romine on the injured list and selected catcher
Erick Castillo from Triple-A Iowa.
Castillo, 28, will wear number 87 and is looking to make his major league debut during tonight’s 6:35 p.m. ET game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. The five-foot eleven-inch Castillo has appeared in 370 career minor league games in the Cubs system after he was signed as a non-drafted free agent, November 16, 2010, from Araure, Venezuela. The right-handed hitter owns a .212 career batting average (238-for-1,125) with 41 doubles, six home runs, 101 RBI and a .281 on-base percentage. He has caught 338 games (2,706.1 innings) while committing 30 errors in 2,701 chances, good for a .989 fielding percentage. Castillo has batted .199 (34-for-171) with five doubles, one home run and 19 RBI in 57 games while splitting time with Double-A Tennessee and Iowa this season. Romine, 32, has hit .217 (13-for-60) with two doubles, one home run and five RBI in 28 games for the Cubs this season.
