Cubs recall top prospect Kevin Alcantara, option Miles Mastrobuoni to ACL |
Philadelphia, Pa. – The Chicago Cubs today recalled Kevin Alcántara from Triple-A Iowa and optioned INF
Miles Mastrobuoni to the Arizona Complex League. Alcántara will make his major league debut with his first appearance and wear #13 for the Cubs.
Alcántara, 22, in his first season with Iowa, hit .292 (38-for-130) with five home runs, 22 RBI and an .848 OPS across 35 appearances. At the time of his call-up, his .292 batting average and .848 OPS ranked fourth among Triple-A hitters this season. Prior to his promotion to the I-Cubs, he hit .272 (79-for-291) with nine home runs and 39 RBI in 76 games with Double-A Tennessee, including an 11-game hitting streak from July 9-27 where he hit .390 (16-for-41) with 13 RBI and a 1.105 OPS. Alcántara is currently rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 69 prospect and the Cubs’ No. 6 prospect. He also entered the 2024 as the No. 80 prospect according to Baseball Prospectus. Across five minor league seasons, the Santo Domingo, D.R., native is hitting .281 (427-for-1,520) with 48 home runs, 260 RBI and a .803 OPS. Entering the 2023 season, Alcántara was ranked as MLB’s No. 87 prospect and Baseball America’s No. 91 ranked prospect and was named an Arizona Fall League Rising Star. He was signed by the New York Yankees as an international free agent in 2018 and was acquired by the Chicago Cubs with RHP Alexander Vizcaino from New York in 2021 in exchange for 1B Anthony Rizzo and cash considerations. Mastrobuoni, 28, is hitting .194 (19-for-98) with four RBI in 50 games played with the Cubs this season.
