LOS ANGELES – The Chicago Cubs today activated left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Michael Rucker to Triple-A Iowa.

Smyly will start today’s 3:10 p.m. CT game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Smyly, 33, landed on the 15-day injured list June 1 (retroactive to May 31) with a strained right oblique. On July 4, he made his lone rehab start with Single-A South Bend, striking out six in 4.0 innings. Smyly is 2-5 with a 3.80 ERA (18 ER/42.2 IP) in nine starts during his first season with the Cubs. The lefthander tossed 9.2-scoreless innings in his first two starts of the season, joining Randy Wells, Bill Lee and Mike Prendergast as the fourth Cub starter since 1893 to not allow a run in his first two starts with the club.

Smyly is 48-44 with a 4.16 ERA (407 ER/880.0 IP), one complete game, one shutout and three saves in 226 career games (143 starts) with Detroit (2012-14), Tampa Bay (2014-16), Texas (2019), Philadelphia (2019), San Francisco (2020), Atlanta (2021) and the Cubs (2022).

Rucker, 28, is 0-1 with one hold and a 5.25 ERA (14 ER/24.0 IP) in 15 relief appearances for the Cubs this season.
