Cubs struggle at plate, fall to Astros

HOUSTON -- The Cubs fell to the Astros 2-1 in a full house at Minute Maid Park on Saturday. Marwin Gonzalez put a perfect bunt down to score Altuve from third base to put the Astros up by two in the third inning. The Cubs offense failed to muster more than one run the entire ballgame, tying up the series at one with one more to play Sunday night.

Lackey (9-8) failed earn his tenth win of the season even though his stuff was there, inducing 14 swinging strikes and getting 13 more called strikes. Rookie Alex Bregman hit a home run over the right field wall to put the Astros on the board. A mistake pitch by Lackey that didn’t cost him too dearly at the time, but proved to make a difference in the game. Defensively, Contreras threw out Jake Marisnick trying to steal second, and Kris Bryant made his 13th error of the season.

Offensively, Anthony Rizzo and Bryant combined to go 0-for-7 with a walk. The Bryzzo combo in the middle of the lineup has failed to do much in their last few games going just 4-for-21 in the last three games. While the Cubs are set up to be able to win games without their two best hitters producing, batting under .200 won’t help the team either.

The Cubs will take on the Houston Astros for one more game at 8 PM EDT on ESPN for Sunday Night Baseball.
