CINCINNATI – The Chicago Cubs today placed catcher Yan Gomes on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain (retroactive to May 24) and activated infielder Nico Hoerner off the 10-day injured list.

Hoerner, 25, was placed on the injured list May 15 (retroactive to May 12) with a right ankle sprain. He has a .271 average (26-for-96) with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 11 RBI in 29 games for Chicago this season. Hoerner’s .991 fielding percentage (1 E/108 TC) leads major league shortstops and his 2.99 assists per nine-innings rank second among N.L. shortstops.

In parts of four major league seasons and 141 games, Hoerner has batted .271 (117-for-431) with 19 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 57 RBI with 10 stolen bases. In 2020, he was a finalist for the N.L. Rawlings Gold Glove at second base, recording a .977 fielding mark in 37 games during the abbreviated 60-game season.

Originally selected by Chicago in the first round (24th overall) of the 2018 draft out of Stanford University, Hoerner was the first member of the 2018 MLB draft class to make his major league debut when he was promoted from Double-A Tennessee, September 9, 2019.

Gomes, 34, has played in 24 games for the Cubs this season and recorded a .247 average (18-for-73) with four doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. His 5.00 plate appearances per strikeout rank third on the Cubs (min. 50 plate appearances).
