Cubs place Keegan Thompson on 10-day IL, recall pitcher

by -

PITTSBURGH – The Chicago Cubs today placed righthanded pitcher Keegan Thompson on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 27) with right shoulder inflammation and recalled righthanded pitcher Jason Adam from Triple-A Iowa.

Adam, 30, has no record and a 7.27 ERA (7 ER/8.2 IP) in 10 outings for Chicago this season, walking six and striking out 16. He was selected from Iowa, September 24, and served as the team’s “29th man” for that day’s split doubleheader vs. the St. Louis Cardinals, tossing a perfect inning with three strikeouts in the first game, before he was optioned back to Iowa following the twin bill.

The right-handed pitching Adam had been designated for assignment, May 25, and joined Iowa after clearing waivers. Adam suffered an open dislocation of his left ankle and was placed on Iowa’s seven-day disabled list, May 23. Upon his return to action, he posted a 1.80 ERA (1 ER/5.0 IP) with one walk and seven strikeouts in five outings from September 7-22 between the ACL Cubs and Iowa.

Adam owns a 5-4 record with eight holds and a 4.83 ERA (41 ER/76.1 IP) in 77 career relief appearances with the Royals (2018), Blue Jays (2019) and Cubs (2020-21). He has struck out 92 batters, good for an average of 10.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, with 39 walks and a 1.34 WHIP.

Thompson, 26, is 3-3 with a 3.38 ERA (20 ER/53.1 IP) in 32 games (six starts) during his first major league season.
