David Ross comments on Cubs' managerial opening |
BRISTOL, Conn. — Now that the Chicago Cubs' 2019 season is in the books, all of the attention surrounding the North Siders will turn to the Cubs' managerial search, as Sunday's season finale marked the final game of manager
Joe Maddon's Cubs tenure. Maddon's contract is expiring, and the Cubs announced prior to the Cubs' season-ending 9-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium that Maddon will not be returning in 2020.
Former Cubs catcher and team leader David Ross has been considered a potential candidate to replace Maddon for several months now, but, up until Sunday evening, Ross played down those rumors. However, Ross, who works for ESPN as an MLB analyst and commentator, said on Baseball Tonight that "the interest would be there" if the Cubs came calling. Ross is still close friends with several current Cubs players, so the Cubs' front office very well might show serious interest in bringing Ross aboard as the new skipper. David Ross, tonight, on Baseball Tonight: "I think it's one of the best jobs in baseball. I've got a lot of close ties with those guys. I think the interest would be there. I think my heart is drawn to that dugout a little bit." It was a honor having the opportunity to play for Joe Maddon and winning a Championship with him during one of the greatest runs in the history of the Chicago Cubs. I learned a tremendous amount from him and wish him continued success in this game. pic.twitter.com/xr0OLFSTiZ
