Jon Lester optimistic about Cubs: "This team will return to greatness in '21"

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs limped out of the 2020 Playoffs after losing two straight games to the Miami Marlins in the National League Wild Card Series.

The team was unable to win a game therefore game three starter Jon Lester wasn't able to pitch in the postseason which he usually excels.

Lester took to Twitter on Saturday and said that the future is bright for the Cubs under the helm of his friend and manager David Ross.

"Coming up short when you have a group this talented is really tough to stomach," he posted. "Incredible job by Manager David Ross this year, who exceeded even my expectations. This team will return to greatness in ‘21, and with the City of Chicago behind you, anything is possible!"

His fellow teammate Yu Darvish and others were really hoping to see Lester pitch one more time.

"Very sad right now, because my focus today was to have Lester pitch one more start at Wrigley. That was my goal today and I couldn't make that happen. I'm very disappointed."

Lester will become a free agent this winter if the Cubs don't pick up his $25 million option for next season.

For the season, Lester had a 3-3 record with a 5.16 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.
