Carl Edwards Jr. placed on IL, Cubs recall reliever

by -

LOS ANGELES – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards, Jr. on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 10) with a left thoracic strain and recalled left-handed pitcher Tim Collins from Triple-A Iowa. Collins will be available for the Cubs tonight when they begin their four-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Collins, 29, joins the Cubs for the third time this season as he has posted no record and a 3.86 ERA (2 ER/4.2 IP) in five relief outings during his first two stints from April 10-25 and May 25-26. He has gone 1-1 with one save, a 1.00 WHIP and a 2.12 ERA (4 ER/17.0 IP) in 17 relief outings with Iowa this season, limiting foes to a .140 batting average, as he has allowed only one hit to a left-handed batter (1-for-20, .050). Collins signed a major league contract with the Cubs in March.

Overall, Collins is 12-17 with 48 holds and a 3.63 ERA (96 ER/238.1 IP) in 271 major league relief appearances with Kansas City (2011-14), Washington (2018) and the Cubs (2019). He returned to the big leagues last year with Washington after not pitching in the majors since 2014 due to a pair of Tommy John surgeries in 2015 and 2016. In his return with the Nationals last year, Collins posted no record with four holds and a 4.37 ERA (11 ER/22.2 IP) in 38 relief outings. He also made 30 relief appearances with Triple-A Syracuse, going 2-4 with a 3.94 ERA (14 ER/32.0 IP).

Edwards, Jr., 27, is 1-1 with four holds and a 5.40 ERA (9 ER/15.0 IP) in 19 relief outings for the Cubs this season.
