Cubs, Padres discussed trade involving Javy Baez

Don't shoot the messenger but the Chicago Cubs were listening to an offer during Winter Meetings for second baseman Javy Baez.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reported that the San Diego Padres were trying to acquire Baez but the two teams couldn't make it work.

"The Padres balked at the Cubs’ asking price for infielder Javier Baez at the winter meetings, moving on to other pursuits, Rosenthal said. "The Cubs likely would have wanted a controllable starter such as Luis Perdomo or Dinelson Lamet for Baez, who would have solved the Padres’ need for a long-term shortstop."

Both of those pitchers have at least four-years left of team control, so the deal did make some sense from both sides. However, Baez is one of the top young defensive players in all of baseball and has tremendous power at the plate for a second baseman, so you better get something as equally significant in return. I know the Cubs need starting pitching but I'm glad they didn't put the trigger on this move because it's just fun watching Baez play baseball on the North Side.

In 2017, Baez hit .273 with 23 homers, 75 RBIs, and had a .317 on-base percentage. For his short MLB career, he is hitting .255 with 47 dingers and 158 RBIs.

He was drafted by the Cubs in the first round (9th overall) of the 2011 MLB draft.
