Cubs News: Jake Arrieta gets MRI done on leg

by - Senior Editor -

Jake Arrieta limped off the field in the third inning with a leg injury on Monday afternoon. Arrieta grabbed the back of his right leg near his hamstring after the pitch that he was hurt on.

The veteran righty tried to throw a practice pitch to see if he could continue in the game but stopped quickly without even throwing the ball. He walked off in severe pain with the trainers and manager Joe Maddon as his day ended after 2 1/3 innings and giving up three runs including two homers by Josh Bell and Max Moroff respectively.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said following the game to reporters that it was "kind of a cramp" on his right leg and that he hoped it wasn't worse than that.

"As of now, I don’t foresee it being much of an issue," Arrieta said to reporters on Monday night. "Grabbed mid-hamstring. Tightened up pretty good. Everything looks OK. MRI a possibility."

The Cubs have decided for Arrieta to get an MRI on Tuesday afternoon even though Arrieta felt fine today. The team wants to make sure they understand whether it was just a cramp or a larger hamstring issue. Now that the swelling has gone down, the MRI can show if he will able to make his next scheduled start on Saturday.
