Cubs place Coghlan, Smith on disabled list

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton from Triple-A Iowa, placed outfielder Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib contusion and placed right-handed pitcher Joe Smith on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

Patton will be available for the Cubs tonight as they continue their four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.

The 28-year-old Patton joins the Cubs for the fourth time this season having posted a 1-1 record with a 5.11 ERA (7 ER/12.1 IP) in nine big league outings. With Iowa, he has gone 1-0 with 11 saves and a 0.77 ERA (3 ER/35.0 IP) in 34 relief appearances. Patton has struck out 57 in 35.0 innings, good for an average of 14.7 strikeouts per nine innings. He has limited foes to a .175 batting average and a 1.03 WHIP.

Coghlan, 31, is batting .222 (12-for-54) with four doubles and five RBI in 27 games since returning to the Cubs in June. He began the season by playing 51 games in Oakland and has combined to bat .165 (35-for-212) with nine doubles, five home runs and 19 RBI in 78 games between the two stops.

Smith, 32, was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on August 1 and has posted no record with a 7.36 ERA (3 ER/3.2 IP) in six appearances with the Cubs. He has combined to go 1-4 with a 4.14 ERA (19 ER/41.1 IP) in 44 relief outings between the two stops this season.
