Cubs make several roster moves

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Ryan Tepera from the 10-day injured list and recalled left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan from Triple-A Iowa. Left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 7) with irregular heartbeat and right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott has been optioned to Iowa.

Tepera, 33, landed on the 10-day injured list on June 29 with a left calf strain. He has posted an 0-2 record with a 3.35 ERA (14 ER/37.2 IP), one save and 14 holds in 37 relief appearances for Chicago this season. He has walked 12, struck out 41, recorded a 0.82 WHIP and limited opponents to a .148 average.

In two seasons with the Cubs starting in 2020, Tepera has a 3.55 ERA (23 ER/58.1 IP) with one save, 16 holds and an 0-2 record in 58 relief appearances. He has pitched in all or part of seven major league seasons with the Blue Jays (2015-19) and Cubs, going 12-14 with a 3.62 ERA (110 ER/273.2 IP), 11 saves, 101 walks, 275 strikeouts and 55 holds in 274 games (one start).

Ryan, 29, is in his fifth stint with the Cubs, having posted a 3.38 ERA (1 ER/2.2 IP) in three relief appearances, with two walks and two strikeouts. He was designated for assignment, May 7, and outrighted to Iowa, May 9, then had a fourth stint with Chicago in June. In 17 outings with Iowa this season, Ryan is 2-0 with one save, a 1.59 ERA (4 ER/22.2 IP) and a .075 WHIP while striking out 24 compared to six walks.

Ryan is in his fourth season with the Cubs organization after signing with the club on December 29, 2017. The lefthander appeared in 18 games in 2020, going 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA (9 ER/15.2 IP), four holds and one save. In 2019, Ryan went 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA (24 ER/61.0 IP) and 14 holds while limiting left-handed hitters to a .226 average (21-for-93) in a career-high and team-leading 73 games.

Wieck, 29, has spun 17.0 scoreless innings in 15 outings for Chicago this season, walking 10, striking out 28 and pitching to a 1.18 WHIP.

Abbott, 25, owns a 6.35 ERA (8 ER/11.1 IP) in five relief appearances for the Cubs this season. In eight starts for Iowa, Abbott is 1-3 with a 5.88 ERA (27 ER/41.1 IP), 18 walks and 64 strikeouts, good for an average of 13.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.
