by - Senior Editor -

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been suspended 40-games without pay, retroactive to September 21 for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence Policy. He will be available to play around May 1 next season.

Russell released a statement about his suspension via ESPN:

"After gaining a full understanding of the situation I have concluded its in the best interest of my family to accept MLB's proposed resolution of this matter. I wish my ex-wife well and hope we can live in peace for the benefit of our child."

Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein met with the media Wednesday and said the following about the suspension.

"Clearly we support MLB's finding and Addy's decision to accept the suspension," he said.
