Cubs News: Daniel Descalso makes revelation about his ankle injury |
DES MOINES, Iowa — Chicago Cubs second baseman
Daniel Descalso is currently playing for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs as he attempts to return from an ankle injury that landed him on the injured list in late July. There has been speculation regarding exactly what led to Descalso's lengthy layoff, and the infielder shed some light on it while talking with the media on Wednesday.
"I battled it for a lot of the year," Descalso said of the ankle injury, "and finally got to the point where it was time to take a rest and get it healthy. But it's feeling a lot better now." Descalso got off to a solid start to his Cubs tenure after getting inked to a deal by the North Siders in the offseason, as he was arguably the Cubs' top hitting threat off the bench through the first month of play. However, Descalso turned his ankle on the basepaths in a game on May 4 and has not been the same since. In fact, Descalso returned to action just two days after tweaking his ankle, meaning that he might not have been given enough time to recover. Since then, Descalso has received limited at-bats and has hit a woeful .104, in addition to making several baserunning and defensive blunders along the way. Descalso could very well remain with Iowa until the MLB rosters expand on Sept. 1, as the increased playing time in Triple-A ball will give Descalso a chance to get back in a groove after not playing much for the Cubs in July. "I've only played a couple innings at a time and taken a couple at-bats at a time," Descalso said when discussing his Iowa stint, "but running the bases feels better. I feel pretty good at the plate right now, so it's good to be back out there.
