Cubs place Steve Cishek on 10-day IL, recall reliever

CINCINNATI – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Steve Cishek on the 10-day injured list with left hip inflammation and recalled right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples from Triple-A Iowa. Maples will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their four-game series at the Cincinnati Reds.

Maples, 27, joins the Cubs for the fourth time this year, as he has gone 1-0 with a 5.63 ERA (5 ER/8.0 IP) in 10 relief appearances with the Cubs during his first three stints from April 26-May 6, May 25-June 4 and June 29-July 3. He has limited foes to a .148 batting average (4-for-27) with no extra-base hits allowed, 10 walks and 13 strikeouts in 8.0 innings. He has gone 3-4 with four saves and a 4.72 ERA (18 ER/34.1 IP) in 30 outings with Iowa this season, striking out 63 while walking 30 in 34.1 innings and limiting foes to a .145 batting average.

The righthander has spent parts of the last three years in the big leagues with the Cubs, going 2-0 with an 8.68 ERA (18 ER/18.2 IP) in 25 relief outings, as he has recorded 33 strikeouts and issued 21 walks in 18.2 innings.

Maples was originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2011 Draft. Overall, he is 18-24 with 38 saves and a 4.35 ERA (154 ER/318.2 IP) in 206 career appearances (all but 30 in relief) covering eight minor league seasons. Over the last three seasons, he has struck out 238 batters in 136.1 innings across three minor league levels.

Cishek, 33, has gone 3-5 with seven saves and a 3.58 ERA (20 ER/50.1 IP) in 54 appearances with the Cubs this season.
